Wensleydale lambs locks (Raw Wool/fleece)

£3.50
Regular price £3.50

Very delicate white raw lamb locks.  From our lambs first shearing at 5 - 6 months old.  The locks range between 3 - 5 or 6 and occasionally 7 inches.  These locks are stunning.  Lustrous, very soft, the colour is amazing, they fall into wavy locks with little effort to separate and they are sheared before any sun or rain can damage their delicate tips.

(photo is 100g / 3.53oz)

This is a ‘raw’ product - we hand sort and grade it from raw fleece.  You may find the odd bit of vegetable matter/straw (VM) but this will be minimal as we make every effort to remove it for you.   We only sell the premium part of each fleece after grading and heavy skirting so there should be very little waste.  Locks can be individually pulled making this an ideal craft supply for dolls hair, decoration, weaving and spinning.

Depending on the time of year that you purchase your fleece you will find different textures and colours.  Once the fleece has been off the sheep’s back for a number of months, your locks may feel wet but I would like to remind you that this is the lanolin which has been absorbed into the fleece.  This is healthy for the sheep, so if our locks feel heavy with grease then I am happy.

Also, please remember that your fleece is raw, meaning unwashed, and this process is now up to you.  There are several ways to wash your fleece, but if you are unsure then feel free to email us.  Whilst we have tried to remove most of the farm ‘rubbish’ – you will still find some vegetation – including hay.  I am afraid that hay is very hard to remove from the fleece – but my sheep and their welfare and health come first and therefore during winter months we do feed hay and haylage to our flock and we do not coat them.

Each year the lock length is different, because, of course, every sheep is individual and therefore every fleece is unique.  The weather plays a huge part and it can often tell us when to shear – and since we are a flock for wool and not meat, we always do what mother nature tells us!  We hope to average 15 – 21cm (6 - 8 inches) with a lovely curl for the adult locks and 10 – 16cm (4-6 inches) and a gorgeous lustrous wave for the lambs locks.  Black lambs locks can often be an inch shorter (starting from 7.5cm/3 inches) and, I have no idea why!!

When ordering please keep in mind that the actual colours might differ from what you see, due to the settings of my camera, your monitor and the black wool always wants to show grey.

We are a working farm, we keep rare breed Wensleydales black and white, for wool exclusively.  We also keep smaller flocks of Bluefaced Leicesters, Lincoln Longwools and Herdwicks.

Our sheep are in prime condition, with their day to day nutrition and behaviour closely monitored to avoid any wool-breaks. As you can imagine, opting for professional shearers, weighing the sheep monthly and feeding every lamb twice daily for the first year, is an expensive task.

But put simply - happy sheep give the best fleeces and therefore the best yarn and craft supplies and cutting corners gives average ones! These values are behind everything we do at Home Farm.

And finally, my website may not give you the best postage option for larger quantities.  I will always refund any postage difference or send you a pro-forma invoice in advance.  I have some letter size boxes and can occasionally manage to get 50g and 100g in the box and will, of course, always refund any over payment.

Packaging

Wherever possible we will use paper packaging

However, Europe, US, Canada and Rest of World, it is not always possible to use paper due to the soft contents of the package.  If this is the case, we use 90 micron polythene mailbags.  Recycling guide: LDPE 4 (Low density polyethylene).

Low-density polyethylene, or LDPE, is number 4-coded plastic, commonly used to manufacture shopping bags, dry cleaning bags and flexible bottles and lids.  Although not as commonly recycled as number 1 polyethylene terephthalate or number 2 high-density polyethylene, LDPE recycling is gaining traction as its post-consumer uses increase. One use is combining recycled LDPE with wood to create composite lumber suitable for light applications. All these plastics can be recycled into different products, but of the three, LDPE results in the most greenhouse gas savings when it's recycled.

But please - do not put number 4 LDPE plastic into a recycling bin unless you are sure it is accepted. Otherwise, you could contaminate an entire batch of recycled plastic.
