Hand Painted Long Wensleydale Locks (Fleece)

£13.20
Regular price £13.20

22g Long Wensleydale shearling locks hand washed and painted by Nean Farrow.  Using bright and complimentary shades, vibrant and soft choice of colours.  These locks are perfect for a range of projects including dolls hair, mermaids tails, needle felting - so versatile.

This is a natural product and hand dyed.  Every fleece is individual and every pot of dye is made to order.  We dye in small batches and try our very best to keep a continuity of colour.  Some factors affecting this continuity are the differences in each fleece and also the time of the year that the wool is dyed.

Before washing and dyeing, these lustrous locks are selected and hand sorted and graded by me personally and only the strongest and best of the fibre is used.   Locks can be individually pulled making this an ideal craft supply for dolls hair, decoration, weaving and spinning.

Each year the lock length is different, because, of course, every sheep is individual and therefore every fleece is unique.  The weather plays a huge part and it can often tell us when to shear – and since we are a flock for wool and not meat, we always do what mother nature tells us!  We hope to average 15 – 21cm (6 - 8 inches) with a lovely curl for the adult locks and 10 – 16cm (4-6 inches) and a gorgeous lustrous wave for the lambs locks.  Black lambs locks can often be an inch shorter (starting from 7.5cm/3 inches) and, I have no idea why!!  Longer locks in good condition are stunning when hand painted.

This listing is for hand dyed Wensleydale and your locks will be from a Wensleydale ewe or wether who will be between 18 and 36 months old when skilfully sheared.  Silky, lustrous and very soft.  We hope to average 20 – 25cm (8-10 inches) with a lovely well defined curl and pulled.

When ordering please keep in mind that the actual colours might differ from what you see, due to the settings of my camera and your monitor!

We are a working farm, we keep rare breed Wensleydales black and white, for wool exclusively.  We also keep smaller flocks of Bluefaced Leicesters, Lincoln Longwools and Herdwicks!

Our sheep are in prime condition, with their day to day nutrition and behaviour closely monitored to avoid any wool-breaks. As you can imagine, opting for professional shearers, weighing the sheep monthly and feeding every lamb twice daily for the first year, is an expensive task.

But put simply - happy sheep give the best fleeces and therefore the best yarn and craft supplies and cutting corners gives average ones! These values are behind everything we do at Home Farm.

Packaging

Wherever possible we will use paper packaging

However, Europe, US, Canada and Rest of World, it is not always possible to use paper due to the soft contents of the package.  If this is the case, we use 90 micron polythene mailbags.  Recycling guide: LDPE 4 (Low density polyethylene).

Low-density polyethylene, or LDPE, is number 4-coded plastic, commonly used to manufacture shopping bags, dry cleaning bags and flexible bottles and lids.  Although not as commonly recycled as number 1 polyethylene terephthalate or number 2 high-density polyethylene, LDPE recycling is gaining traction as its post-consumer uses increase. One use is combining recycled LDPE with wood to create composite lumber suitable for light applications. All these plastics can be recycled into different products, but of the three, LDPE results in the most greenhouse gas savings when it's recycled.

But please - do not put number 4 LDPE plastic into a recycling bin unless you are sure it is accepted. Otherwise, you could contaminate an entire batch of recycled plastic.
